TARGET = SUSTAINABLE CHANGE! LAMb CHALLENGE - STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN!

This week has been one of both fabulous opportunities and great challenges.  We have worked to join together with several other NGO's to form a team to carry out delivering some critical training - Jayne was doing training in Ukraine in the area Trauma.  Lynn was in Ukraine with Costa training in the area of leadership with both NGO leaders and pastors.  Ruby and David were working with the International University of Central Asia - startegizing on how to carry on in the future to ensure young students from the Tokmok and surrounding area can get a quality and affordable university degree.  And then there were the meetings to plan for delivering training to Red River Orphanage Staff, Life Skill Training for the youth at Red River, working with a church in Bishkek - where David and Ruby did training in the area of adoption.

Oh and the challenge?  Well, computer would not charge - internet did not work most times and in spite of these little bumps along the way - an amazing connection was re-established.

NOW THE REST OF THE STORY

Remember Jenia - we worked with him years ago - you will remember we helped him get a much needed operation and after he graduated from the orphanage - found his parents and reunited him with his birth family.  Well, through the years we lost contact with him - cell numbers changed and our critical contact person moved to another country.

But in the process of planning our next steps with Red River Orphanage - we were able to get our number to a person who said she was able to reach Jenia.  Well as we were on our way to Bishkek - Jenia called and we agreed to meet in Bishkek for lunch.

Here is the update:

  • Jenia has been working full time for the last year at a cake factory
  • He is still in contact with his birth family - yet there are still difficulties in bridging from his early abandonment to his now adult hood.
  • Jenia is now 20 years old.  We met him when he was 14.
  • He was so excited to reconnect and so were we.  We loaded him up with a cell phone and lots of new numbers!

    HAPPY DAYS!

    Ruby, Jenia and Pastor David
    Reunion with Jenia in Kyrgyzstan!

OUR CELL GROUP.... AND SAMARITAN'S PURSE DELIVERED TO DAYSPRING

For many year we have packed boxes for Samaritan's Purse and that packing has always been such a wonderful experience.  But I really think no experience is as good as seeing the boxes delivered.  We were able to watch this as the Cell Group from the local church Crambojay, brought boxes to our Dayspring little children.  Oh what a blessing!
    Boxes delivered!

And Oh the Wonders of What is Inside!

THE TEAM FROM PARKSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH ARRIVED TODAY!!

The day - Resurrection Sunday in North America - brought to us here in Kyrgyzstan a wonderful team of six individuals - all representatives of the Parkside Christian Church from Cincinnati, Ohio.  This church is the solid support for our Jeremiah Project - having been the foundation from which the Jeremiah House became possible.

Today we were honored to show the team Dayspring and the Jeremiah House,  introduce the children and say THANK YOU PARKSIDE!  One wonderful gift from Parkside was a stack of pictures and letters from little girls from a class from the church.  Each little Parkside girl wrote a special letter to a Dayspring girl - sent her picture and sent blessings and prayers for our children. What a touching moment for us to watch the team leader for this - Lori give each little girl her letter and picture from her US "sister."

    AND THE NEXT WEEK?

    1.  John and Julie will be leading the team all around the valley.
    2.  Pastor David and Jayne will be training in Bishkek.
    3.  Lynn will be sharing at the cell group and working with Jeremiah House and Dayspring children and projects.
    4.  Ruby will be developing the next steps with Red River, for training, Life Skills, as well as coordinating upcoming training with Renewal Church.

All the team will be serving the Seniors and Men With Disabilities this week as well. Watch all the team blogs for updates!

    Stop -
for the one in front of us!

    Look -
around for what is needed and where we might serve!

    Listen -
for what is our call and what is not!  THEN MOVE!

The team is on the MOVE!

DAY ONE KYRGYZSTAN

Wow, what a day!   Dayspring this morning and a pre-meeting for our board meeting for Mercy Foundations .....International University Of Central Asia.

Dayspring is getting gardens ready....but oh the simple tools.  So I am making my list:  garden plants, tools, ladder to get to fix things, rain gutters, fix foundation,  fix walks, plant a grass area for children to play, a second freezer for putting in summer fruits and vegetables, meats, etc.  Tomorrow we will do the same for Jeremiah House.

Pastor David is here and we will make the rounds, giving encouragement to our team and making the most needed lists.  Jeremiah House needs a freezer as well.  These teens like to eat and the like meat. Oh yes, that goes on the list too.....MEAT!

Tonight a great evening with our team members Larisa and Tanya.....lots of planning for the future projects for Discovery Project and working with persons with disabilities!  Stay tuned!

A few of our amazing children!!!

REALLY COOL STUFF

Ruby's group in Perm, Russia.
Completed four days of training today.  This group of key professionals are ready to tackle the region and help workers who are helping strengthen families.
THEY ARE AN AWESOME GROUP!

TATIANA, RUBY AND VERA
Vera will be traveling soon and learning - bringing all back to Perm to move forward building a  Center of Excellence!  We cannot wait to see this POWER HOUSE OF A WOMAN move mountains to help families in crisis!

NOW THE REALLY COOL STUFF

UKRAINE TEAM NOW HAS CHANCE TO SHOW OTHERS - WHAT AND HOW....

Ed Dickson invited us long ago to come to Ukraine to train at a church and in orphanages in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine and long ago - somewhere around 2003 - , as we envisioned a training Center in Ukraine that would be serving across the country, we hoped for a Center that could be a Model of Excellence for change for helping children and others

At that time our focus for change was in Ukraine.  We hoped for the work of Lamb to grow into something that truly helped others activate their talents and gifts in order to help one another.  As time progressed, we saw change, heard stories of being helped.  The work of LAMb grew as did the stories.

We  began to build partnerships across Ukraine.  Things began to move fast and we could see so much that could be done and we had a team of nationals ready to go.

Finally came the time to formalize a Center and actually hire national staff to do this.  The International Leadership and Development Center (ILDC) was created in joint partnership with Father's House, Christian Broadcasting Network (Ukraine), the Institute of Human Services (IHS) from the US, and of course LAMb International.  ILDC was registered and the story continues!

Today, ILDC is a well known and accepted training and consulting organization for Ukraine.  Known for training that will help strengthen families, serve children, develop leaders, encourage pastors and church leadership, etc.  Well, very soon, ILDC will be visited by leadership from Perm - (Vera, pictured above.) to learn all about what, how, etc.  ILDC will be the model from which Vera will begin learning how to continue building her center in Perm, Russia.  Then we will invite Vera on to the US to visit IHS to continue her learning and develop a plan.

What exciting times for the work of LAMb.....activating and equipping the nationals!

BUT THERE IS MORE COOL STUFF....

Our team member Jayne applied for a grant to Orphan Promise, CBN in the USA.  To make a long, but extremely exciting story short that answer came at the end of January – YES.  LAMb International has received a grant to provide training in different locations as a pilot run.  Over the next 12 months, Jayne and Davie and the team will be working in Ukraine, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Armenia, and possibly Nicargua and Zimbawe taking tools into these countries to help workers, parents, church leaders understand and become more equipped to help children who have suffered trauma in their lives.

For well over two years, David and Jayne have been working on a trauma informed training curriculum to help workers guide families and for families to learn how to live with wounded, hurting children.  The pilot series has integrated some key principles from the work of Dr. Karyn Purvis and her team who have written the Trust Based Relationship Intervention materials. Their
work is amazing stuff!!!  TBRI is hope for children and families and we see it everyday.

AND EVEN MORE COOL STUFF.......

How about developing a Life Skill specialist for working in the orphanage?  Starting with one big orphanage we work with in a city near Tokmok.....BUT YOU WILL HAVE TO TUNE AFTER RUBY ARRIVED INTO KYRGYZ to get this story.  She arrives tomorrow.

JOHN AND JULIE HEADING FOR KYRGYZSTAN

LYNN'S FIRST DAY OF TRAINING

LYNN'S GROUP WORKING HARD - "Digging in!"

Our defining scripture is Ephesians 4:12.  Here once again, is the reason we head out.  To activate and equip.  We are so honored to be working with the Church of God in Slayvnansk, Ukraine. These leaders coming together to grow, develop and serve.  What an amazing time for all.  Each leader is the hope for the future for Ukraine.  We are just a small part of the bigger whole.

Next stop for Lynn - Kiev, to work with another group of leaders who are part of different NGO's and government offices.  There most of the leaders in the group are focused and passionate about moving Ukraine forward to

UKRAINE WITHOUT ORPHANS.

And Ruby in Russia?  Well each person here is being challenged to move forward - make a difference - help to strengthen families in the work you do because we BELIEVE - IN

RUSSIA WITHOUT ORPHANS.

And as the team gathers in Kyrgyzstan - most all of us will be there together soon....and together we each will do our part to plan, project and make a difference - mobilizing the nationals there!  Teaching, training leadership  and at the same time serving our children at Dayspring and Jeremiah House.  Why? Because we BELIEVE - IN A

KYRGYZSTAN WITHOUT ORPHANS.

PLANNING FOR WHAT COULD REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE

UKRAINE STRATEGIC PLANNING

Our team in Ukraine worked for over 16 hours putting together a plan for the next two years.  Understanding that things are changing and we must respond accordingly.  Finally today, we turned out a plan to focus on strengthening families and promoting in every way we can
UKRAINE WITHOUT ORPHANS

The team working here with Ruby - Oleg, Dashsa and Max are committed to making a difference.

"We are to make our plans and He will direct our steps."

GREAT JOB TEAM!

After completing the plan - the team met Karen Spring and Galina Shafer with CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network)  - leadership and made some additional plans for 2014.  Together with our partners, we will co-sponsor a conference in the Spring of 2014 - Strengthening Families.  This will be the conference for our team to co-sponsor with CBN..  We expect over 200 Christian Adoptive Parents to attend the conference.  Conference costs are around $40,000.  We offer this to families who are not able to pay for such an event.  We bring them to Kiev for the weekend, give them quality speakers who have adopted and provide a lovely hotel (Raddison Hotel) room and meals for them for the nights they stay to attend the conference.  We charge the parents a very small fee for the entire weekend.

RIGHT NOW WE ARE LOOKING FOR CONFERENCE SPONSORS
LARGE AND SMALL!!!!!!!

WE HAVE $13,000 COMMITTED NOW AND
NEED TO RAISE ANOTHER $27,000

If this is something you have passion for = contact us!  WE need to get started.

WHAT IS NEXT? OUR COMMITMENT TO THEM...

LAMb International works to come behind the nationals -  helping them to face the many challenges they experience in serving children, those with disabilities, the widows and families who are in crisis.  We are committed to our defining scripture - Ephesians 4:12.  "to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."

With our present work in Ukraine and in Kyrgyzstan, we see the nationals stepping up and making a difference.  ILDC in Ukraine is carrying out activities that are bringing leaders to new levels of confidence, encouraging pastors, helping lead studies in Bible Colleges and providing critical skills and abilities to those working with children and families.  The project Adopt Ukraine has been most successful - helping many national families adopt, supporting them through crisis and being there to provide resources as many families have struggled to keep their families together.  Soon we will offer comprehensive training on a  number of areas that are critical for Ukraine at this time:  training on working with children who have experienced trauma and training on working through adoption issues that can and sometimes lead to adoption disruption.

As well, we will be conducting training events with Christian families who have adopted, facilitating a retreat with Christian adoptive families and their children - along with our team members Pastor David and Jayne Schooler.

Our team in Ukraine work together to ensure they are providing resources, such as translated books, and other tools as well.  We are proud of our staff in Ukraine.  They are true champions for UKRAINE WITHOUT ORPHANS.

In Kyrgyzstan we are seeing great results with Dayspring and now the Jeremiah Project (see previous blog on the details of the projects).  Youth are finding success in school, showing signs of emotional well-being and developing as young people in every area of development.

And we continue...the BUS HAS  NOT STOPPED.... we have an awesome team in Kyrgyzstan!

Today, we want to let you know the work that is ahead for the Kyrgyzstan team - work to strengthen the resources and grow the mind change in how those with disabilities are treated.  This small pilot project cannot do it all, but it can open the doors to paradigm shifts in thinking, get nationals involved in helping instead of judging and become a training/learning tool for other NGO's who are looking to ensure they are HELPING AND NOT HURTING.   It is small, but large in potential.  We are called to equip - to activate.  We are thankful for such a glorious opportunity - and thank you for being our supporters and encouragers.

NOW THE PROJECT......

DISCOVERY PROJECT
Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan
(A Project Result from work with Hope Alaska)

Draft

Vision:  Kyrgyzstan would recognize the state role and responsibility to provide resources and services to those who have been identified as having developmental disabilities. That by recognizing the responsibility of the state, the disabled would find life in Kyrgyzstan offering them equal opportunities for well-being through growth, education and employment countrywide.

Mission of Discovery Project:  Discovery Project will serve the people of Tokmok and surrounding area.  ILDC/LAMb International endeavor to reach out into the community, assess needs and wants and then to provide different opportunities for the developmentally disabled related to assessment.  We hope to bring hope and dignity to those who come into the project, by teaching Life Skills, native culture crafts, and offer socialization for those who have been isolated from society.  In addition, we hope to provide strong and evidenced based training programs that will give those with disabilities skills and knowledge that will open doors to interdependent living and employment.

PROJECT MANAGER:  TO BE ANNOUNCED (National will be hired.)

COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT

PART 1:  WORK WITH STAFF AT IKSRA HOME FOR DISABLED MEN AND OTHERS WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE LEARNINGS FROM HOPE ALASKA

With the training that Larisa and Tanya have received while in Alaska, it became our goal to transfer as much of this learning as possible to the staff at Iskra, Home for Disabled Men.

Larisa agreed to bring this training to the staff.  In addition, Hope has agreed to make several training videos which we will have dubbed into Russian – these videos will be used for training events at Iskra as well as at other training events scheduled by LAMb International.

Hope Alaska has agreed to come to Kyrgyzstan to review the progress of the transfer of skills.  They will be there to coach and further the transfer of learning received by Larisa and Tanya and to work with other team members who are interested in being involved in the Hope Project in the future

Initial Activities:
  • Work with Larisa and Tanya to identify what training is needed and set up training venues – March/April 2013
  • Develop relationship with disabled home in Tokmok  - begin discussions of how we might be able to join with them for the project – possibly finding one of their workers who could go to Alaska to learn and come back to share as well.

PART 2:  DEVELOP THE DISCOVERY CENTER FOR DISABLED PERSONS

THE DISCOVERY Center will be developed as a model from the Discovery Center that Hope Alaska has created to bring together disabled persons for a variety of reasons:  socialization, learning and fun.

The Discovery Center in Kyrgyzstan will be located in Tokmok.  We will offer social activities, a place for the disabled to come and take craft classes, learn different skills and like Hope – just have fun.  We will cater to all ages…with dance, music and activities that will enrich the lives of the disabled from Iskra, other disabled homes and Tokmok area.

The Discovery Center will be a place in which volunteers will be utilized to serve the disabled.

Our first step in moving forward with the Discovery Center will be to use the present Jeremiah Project Drop in Center as a resource for the start of the Discovery Center.

Activities:
  • Discuss with Red Cross and Social Services the option for JPDIC.
  • Once discussions are completed – sit with staff and make a plan for how we are going to find those who would be willing to come to DC.

PART 3:  DEVELOP RESOURCES AND A SUPPORT GROUP FOR MOMS WHO HAVE CHLDREN WHO ARE DISABLED

When we have identified families who have children living at home who are disabled, we will offer to these families different supports and resources – including helping them get to the Discovery Center for training and being involved with a support group.

Support for the moms could include any of the following:
  • ·       Training
  • ·       Consultation
  • ·       Respite care
  • ·       Resource management
  • ·       Socialization with other moms – support group
  •  Etc.
Activities:
  • Massage training (accomplished – February, 2013 - coordinated by Olga - our Residential Director) for moms of children with developmental disabilities
  • Work with Tokmok Social Services to identify families who might be interested in using resources – especially moms with children in their homes who have developmental disabilities
  • Identify and contact adult persons with disabilities who might be interested in classes in computer, crafts, support groups, etc.  (Create a specific group of questions to gather data about those in community who are not being served.)

PART 4:  DEVELOP A SUPPORT GROUP FOR DISABLED PERSONS – WHICH INCLUDES TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM PARADISE CENTER

At this time, there are no support groups for adult disabled persons or their families.   At Discovery Center we are hoping to offer this service.  We will also provide transportation where possible for those who would like to be involved but cannot be involved.

Activity:
  •  Identify support group facilitators
  •  Bring together a pilot group and conduct first support group
  •  Review and develop a plan to continue

PART 5:  DEVELOP AN EMPLOYMENT/BUSINESS PLAN FOR DISABLED PERSONS

Employment is essentially impossible for those persons who are disabled in Kg.  We want to find a “cottage industry” in which persons can be employed.  This could be as simple as persons making native crafts at the Dscovery Center and selling them to foreigners who come in teams.

Activity:
  • Assess the skills of a group of disabled persons who have been identified that they would like to work.
  •  Explore options for employment in the community
  • Make a plan for an ongoing assessment of community possibilities and opportunities for employment of those with disabilities

PART 6: DEVELOP A PLAN FOR BRINGING PERSONS FROM INSTITUTIONS (WHO ARE ABLE) INTO INDEPENDENT LIVING IN THE COMMUNITY - PURCHASE A HOME

At this time, Larisa and Tanya have identified persons from Iskra who could live independent of the institution.  We hope to create a pilot for this – keeping the home in Iskra – close to the institution so those men who choose to participate in the move can remain connected to their friends at Iskra.  We will be transporting men into Tokmok to join activities at Discovery Center – and envision these men to be our team who will help in some way as volunteers with our support group, etc.

Activity:
  • Identify men who might be candidates for this experience
  • Develop a preparation – training program for the men; along with practice sessions at Discovery Center
  •  Once initial activities are complete – make a plan for purchase and transition

PART 7:  DEVELOP A VOLUNTEER TEAM OF PERSONS TO WORK WITH THE DISABLED

Volunteerism in Eastern Europe and Central Asia are somewhat foreign.  However, we are seeing interest from the churches and from the university students.  We will formalize a volunteer program and when these persons actively take part in volunteering – we will consider them for additional training and work in Alaska with Hope.

Activity:
  • Connect with HOPE and get the list of persons wanting to go to Hope for training and work experience
  •  Meet with prospective persons identified by HOPE as having shown interest
  • Bring together a group of university students that have answered an ad for volunteers – explain the opportunities – take note of those who continue to be interested
  • Create a volunteer guideline protocol, etc
  • Train volunteers and crate a monitoring plan for their work

PART 8:  DEVELOP A WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH HOPE ALASKA TO CONTINUE TRAINING TEAMS FROM KG – WHO WILL RETURN TO WORK WITHIN THE PROJECTS OF LAMB.

Hope has indicated an interest to continue a working relationship together and have additional students come and study.  We have been asked to “vet” these potential applicants.  We will do this through our volunteer program..

Activities:
·       See activities from Part 7 – use these interested persons as potential candidates for HOPE for 2013/2014/
  •  Make a plan to send four persons from Kyrgyzstan (who have been acting as volunteers in one or more of the LAMb projects)  to Alaska in the Fall of 2013.
  • Develop a budget for the trip of the four to HOPE, 2013.

UPDATE ON DAYSPRING AND JEREMIAH HOUSE

CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT FOR KYRGYZSTAN
DEVELOPING PILOTS TO MODEL THE POSSIBILITIES

Dayspring is full - Jeremiah House will have two youth joining us in June and that leaves only one place for a girl.  So - you can say Jeremiah House is ALMOST full.  What does this mean?  WE ARE MOVING FORWARD and are now looking at developing and opening the next step = Morning Star - a home for little boys.  A diversionary program to demonstrate children do not need to go to orphanages - they can go to families.

As we move forward to help our city work with families, see that youth CAN be diverted to families - not orphanages and see that we can work together to provide services for older youth - graduating from orphanages - helping them develop and practice critical LIFE SKILLS.  Well, if only we could bring even more into Dayspring and Jeremiah Project...yet for these children - now 13 in total - soon to be 15, it means the difference of potential success to almost predictable loss and failure in the adult world.  And 10 more little boys once Morning Star is opened.

THE REALITIES...

The statistics are grim.  Out of the graduating youth from orphanage from the former Soviet Union - only 1/3 of the youth are successful.  The other 2/3 end up in prison, suiciding, murdered, trafficked for the sex trade, in prostitution and/or addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.

If we are going to be helping and not hurting - we need to DO SOMETHING!  We cannot just show up and say we are sorry - we need to act - to the best of our ability.  If every NGO would take action - develop plans and steps to make a difference - not just "flip out dollars" we would see a great difference in the global orphan crisis.

I read Greg Montella's facebook and consider him a model of excellence in helping and not hurting with the work he is doing in Moldova.  I read about the work of Kimberly Smith in Darfur and understand the actions and sacrifices she and her husband made to help the "Lost Children" of Sudan/Darfur. HELPING AND NOT HURTING!

I watch the work of our team in Ukraine - working tirelessly to bring critical skills and knowledge to those who work daily with crisis families and children who have experienced trauma and my heart is overjoyed with how they are helping.  HELPING AND NOT HURTING!

I witness the many hours that our team members Jayne and David put into preparing for helping those in crisis - having experienced trauma personally or vicariously through their children's journey.  I have seen the years of dedication from Ed Dickson, serving the orphan - bringing team after team into the orphan world to educate the team members and build a network of support for change, help and well-being of the most vulnerable.  I have been blessed to have Manny from Samaritans Feet as a friend to our family - watching him commit to putting shoes on the feet of one million children - and bringing Jesus into their lives.   I watch our team member Pastor Glen Pitts travel to Nicaragua month after month and work with pastors - discipling them - those from villages - where most would not want to go or even care about.  Oh I could go on and on.  ALL HELPING AND NOT HURTING!

Ruslan, Roman, Alex, Andre, Luba, Nickolai all in Ukraine - heros working toward a WORLD WITHOUT ORPHANS.

Judy, Ron and the team - dedicated to bringing the best of the best in training and materials to those who cannot afford it or ever believe they might receive such gifts.

It goes on and on.  We MUST WORK TOGETHER - WE MUST STEP UP AND TAKE A STAND.  James 1:27 says that "..religion that is acceptable to God......is to care for the orphan and widow in their time of distress....."

WE CANNOT REMAIN SILENT - HEAD TO YOUR CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY, YOUR CHILD WELFARE AGENCY AND LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU HAVE HEARD THE CALL!
