ETHIOPIA IN FOCUS FOR YOU

LET'S NOT DENY
CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Training is a Catalyst to Change

"We need to create a platform to discuss this with key leaders, police, government, NGO's, churches and more."
... Counselor with a major NGO in Addis Abba

"This is so difficult within our culture - there is so much secrecy - I must work to help children find safety and healing and work differently with the mothers and children we work with."
....worker with a Theological Seminary in Addis Ababa.

We have just completed our time in Kenya and Ethiopia - with three major training events.  Now back in Addis Ababa and heading home tomorrow.

1.  In Nairobi, Kenya we worked with 20 key children's workers from Christian Broadcasting Network, different Orphan's Promise projects and other NGO workers. The training was in Trauma-Informed Care - three intense days - and out of this training, we have 17 potential new trainers.

2.  In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, we had Adoptive families who were from a number of different organizations - these families attended training on The Impact of Trauma on Attachment and How to Tell The Truth to Your Adopted Child.

3.  In Sendafa, Ethiopia, we completed an intensive three days with 30 NGO leaders representing 16 different NGO's and 1 Orphan's Promise partner from Shire.  This training was to cover three different modules of the Child Sexual Abuse Series developed by the Institute for Human Services:  Module 1:  Overview of Child Sexual Abuse; Module 2:  Healthy Sexual Behaviors of Youth and Those Which Cause Concern; Module 3:  Helping Parents Work With Youth Who Have Been Sexually Abused.

In addition, we are working with the Child Development Training and Research Center/ Intergenerational Spiritual Transformation Ministry.

We are honored to follow the calling of Ephesians 4:12 - 16.

"....12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work...."

BRING THE CHILDREN BACK - WE MADE A MISTAKE

NAIROBI, KENYA
Trauma-Informed Training
 For Orphan's Promise
February 2020

"They sent two boys away from their church outreach program because of their aggressive behavior - and after training, they changed their thinking - they now will ask that the boys be returned to the program."

Training is a catalyst to change and this is only one example.  This church program had sent two boys home and asked their grandmother not to send them again, as they were too aggressive.

As they went through the Trauma-Informed Training and learned that all behavior has meaning and speaks of needs - the leaders of this church outreach program began to question the needs of the two boys who were hitting, pushing and acting with aggression.  They came to realized that the ones they had just sent away are likely the two children that needed them the most.

Result?  They let us know,  they are going to the grandmother and ask that she send the boys back to the outreach program.  This program is offered each Saturday to children in the community who are vulnerable children.

They left the training with a very different view of these two little ones - now wanting to "pour into" the lives of these little ones.

Oh, glorious day!
YES, TRAINING IS A CATALYST TO CHANGE!
